Words From the President
Lindsay D Holliday, DMD

Dear Colleagues,

Now begins another season of rituals for lightening the darkness of longer nights and shorter days... from Harvest Moon, through Jack-o-lanterns, and Hanukkah Candles, Christmas Trees, and various Festivals of Light to ring-in another New Year's Eve...

We gather in Thanksgiving beside electric fires we did not generate - from coal we did not excavate - containing energy from rays of ancient sunlight stored in Carbon compounds underground for eons.

The superabundance that we enjoy asks only that we manage it for some continuing increase in benefit to our fellow man and for future generations.   Professionally this means building on our knowledge and giving time and care to meet, greet, fellowship and learn with our peers and with the Officials who make the laws that shape the way we practice the healing arts of Dental Medicine to help our patients. . . In short, come, participate and "share your light" at our meetings:
1- November 20th at Idle Hour Country Club, and 2- Tuesday, December 2, at the "Brickyard at Riverside" (option to bring your spouse!)

May our lights shine out, everywhere, into the world.

- Lindsay

PS
Is it time to brighten up your darkroom?  Now is the season to find inexpensive strings of pure cherry-red LED (Light Emitting Diodes) festive lights at most department stores - for about $7.   Technical information is posted on my website here:
http://www.hollidaydental.com/cdds/news/Safelight.htm
These light strings are comparable to, but brighter, and much less expensive than the Kodak $170 LED Safelight.

Central District Legislative Reception
Tuesday, December 2, 2008
Brickyard at Riverside

After watching our quickly changing world for the last several weeks, is there anyone who does not think knowing your legislator may be important?  Mark your calendar now and make plans to attend this year's event at this new location due to the City Club's closing.  Directions will be on your upcoming invitation.  Also, put March 25, 2009 on your schedule now as that is the Central District's Law Day in Atlanta .  You can easily be back to work in your office that afternoon.  Your participation is not only important, it is needed by your profession.

                                                                        Thanks,  Bill Argo

ADA Report from Dr Ivey

As I mentioned in the last edition, it was my last epistle as your
delegate to the ADA. That was somewhat erroneous, as John and Amy
have demanded a report of the meeting. John may want some more Bill
Shipp type columns as I move out of the way. However, Jay is your new
Vice President and soon will know more than I do.

San Antonio is a nice town for a meeting, but as usual the delegation
didn’t move too far from the hotel. The main issue for us was the definition
of the mid-level provider and the establishment of the Community Dental
Health Provider (CDHC). We were successful in convincing the House of
Delegates to keep the ADA from adopting a definition of the mid-level
provider as ADA policy. We felt that any definition was more likely to justify
the existence of something than clear the air on the subject. On the issue
of the CDHC... we were killed. Our little band of renegades mustered 19+% of the votes. I continue to point out to you that we in the Fifth
District (Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi) live on an island. The only
other district that thinks like we do most of the time is the Fourth Dist (NJ,
MD, Del, DC, and the Armed Services). They supported our point of view.

This summer the AGD raised the question when I thought the matter was
dead. I had hope that they would be the catalyst for some sanity, but in
the end they fell away and the ideologues that opposed us spending large
amounts of money for a project that will in my opinion fail lost. The margin
of the vote demonstrates that a large part of the rest of the world doesn’t
think like we do.

So what’s a person to do? I heard rumors that some high level AGD
members were going to drop their membership in the ADA. Then there
were other rumors that some high level members of the AGD were going
to drop their membership in the AGD. Some of you will ask the question,
why bother to belong to the ADA at all? Well, here’s why! The
environment is going to get worse not better. After this election as I have
already stated to you, the Republicans or the Democrats (that means both)
are going to come after health care. We will still have the fight between
the bull elephant on one side (the Insurance Industry) and the bull elephant
on the other side (the US Government) fighting to see who controls health
care. This time around, unlike the 1993 Clinton Health Plan, dentistry will be
included or so I think. So change is in the air and without a strong voice,
AKA the ADA, we don’t have a chance.

I believe when the wolves are at the door, the national association will
be the only hope that we have. They came to their senses in 1993 and we
have to hope that when pushed, the rest of the country will notice that we
are the correct ones on this issue and rally to the cause...

For another day, we will talk about Access to Care. It is driving the
debate and most people don’t realize that it is still different things to
different people. I believe that we need to be training more dentists in this
country, but for that thought, I mostly get laughs. Remember, you can go it
alone, but it increases the odds that we will all get smashed in the process.

As Ben Franklin warned, “we need to hang together, or we will hang
separately.”

Ty Ivey - ADA Delegate (lame duck)

- John Bowman -

Ben Patterson writes in The Grand Essentials: “I have a theory about old age – I believe that when life has whittled us down, when joints have failed and skin has wrinkled and capillaries have clogged and hardened, what is left of us will be what we were all along – in our essence.”

Exhibit A is a distant uncle. All his life he did nothing but find new ways to get rich. He spent his senescence very comfortably, drooling and gabbling constantly about the money he had made. When life whittled him down to his essence, all there was left was raw greed. This is what he had cultivated in a thousand little ways over a lifetime.

Exhibit B is my wife’s grandmother. When she died in her mid-eighties, she had already been senile for several years. What did this lady talk about? The best example I can think of was when we asked her to pray before dinner. She would reach out and hold the hands of those sitting beside her. A broad beautiful smile would spread across her face. Her dim eyes would fill with tears as she looked up to heaven, and her chin would quaver as she poured out her love to Jesus. That was Edna in a Nutshell. She loved Jesus and she loved people. She couldn’t remember our names, but she couldn’t keep her hands from patting us lovingly whenever we got near her.

What is our essence-our core that we have cultivated in a thousand little ways during our lifetime? How will we be remembered?

Why not today – take time to thank and be grateful for and to our patients who provide our living - our income.

Why not today – call a fellow dentist who has been a friend and helped us along the way of life!

Thank you Ty Ivey who has worked diligently for the cause of dentistry over many decades. He has served us well!

Thank you Lindsay Holliday for serving as a conscience for our society.

Thank all of you who faithfully encourage us all, by your many phone calls.
