Words From the President
Lindsay D Holliday, DMD

As I write this I am looking at a wooden plaque with a gavel that was awarded to my Dad, "Dr. Pete," for serving as CDDS President from 1962-63.

Dad was 42 years old when he served our Central District.  I am, at 53, a "late starter."  Our distant relative, John Henry "Doc" Holliday, the fabled western-gunslinger (a dentist from Griffin, Valdosta and Atlanta Georgia)  was only 36 when he died of TB in Colorado in 1887.  This makes my 53 seem relatively even older.

Speaking of "older", Polaroid Spectra film has recently gone extinct.  This development has made my CU-5 Polaroid camera turn instantly obsolete.  I called up Coke's Camera in Macon, and they said we were the tenth dental office to call them that week.   They confirmed that the film was gone, never to return, due to being "supplanted by digital camera technologies".  This answer does not satisfy me.  I am asking you, my colleagues, to share with us how you are replacing the ease of the Polaroid - where I could invest 10 seconds to aim and shoot and put the camera down, and while I was working on other aspects of patient care, the picture would develop and I would then have an archive quality image to store in the patient chart.  Now it takes me 3-5 minutes to take a digital picture, copy the file to computer, rename the file with the patients name, crop the image and print out a hard copy.  Yes, the digital technology is more powerful and flexible, but it takes much more of my time, when I usually do not need a more powerful and flexible image.  So, I'm asking you all to contact me with a description of your current imaging system - if you like it - and I will share that information in the next Central District newsletter.

The most important issue that we must face this year is our "scope of practice."  Will the ADA continue to slide towards allowing dentistry to be practiced by people with less training than we have?  Much will be revealed at our annual meeting in San Antonio this October.  (See Ty Ivey's report.)

Another challenge this year is Mercury hygiene related to Dental Amalgam.  Amalgam will be with us for the foreseeable future, because it is the most durable and economic restorative material we have for many applications.  Mercury released into our environment can wind up in our food, where it leads to health problems.  Most of the problem mercury comes from coal fired power plants, so some part of our efforts (to reduce mercury dangers) should be to educate ourselves and others about cleaner energy technologies.   The second major source of mercury in Georgia's environment is from chlor-alkali plants (produce chlorine using mercury) The plant in Augusta estimates (at a low #) a loss of fugitive mercury emissions that exceed 700lbs a year.  I will be posting reviews of Mercury Hygiene issues and BMPs (Best Management Practices) for Amalgam online here:
http://www.hollidaydental.com/cdds/Amalgam-BMP.htm

Please contact me if you have any ideas or energy to invest in our chosen profession during our upcoming year together.

- Lindsay

GADPAC

The GADPAC board met in April and again at the GDA annual meeting to discuss the 2008 primary races and their results and to disburse PAC contributions to current legislators for their re-election campaigns.
In addition, the Central District was assigned a goal of $3820 to raise as a district in the campaign to raise $100,000 in funds for Senator Lee Hawkins campaign for state senator.  We beat that goal and actually raised $7550.  During the GDA annual meeting a presentation of $88,495 was made to Senator Hawkins.

ADA Report from Dr Ivey

Well, this will be my last epistle as your delegate to the American Dental Association House of Delegates. I will confess that I have had a most enjoyable time and appreciate the opportunity that you as a district provided me. I must confess that in the last five years the work has been harder and the rewards have been harder to find. A cancer was growing in the American Dental Association. Our Association was being run by an executive director who had his own opinion of what should happen to the profession of dentistry and the thoughts and beliefs of the members were of little concern to him. The unfortunate part of this is that he was good at weaving his web of deceit and deception. The Board of Trustees under his leadership fell into a groupthink spell that was stifling any form of independent thought from the Board of Trustees, the Councils of the ADA and the members of the House of Delegates.

That is the bad news. Here is the good news in case you missed it. This spring the BOT of the ADA fired Dr. Bramson and his CEO Mary Logan. There was no official statement of reason, just the usual rumor mill. I can report to you that from what I know, there were many different reasons from which to choose. I think that the mountain finally got to high even for the BOT to ignore. It was very much like the start of WWI where the assassination of some unknown archduke in Serbia led to World War. In this case, if the rumors are correct, a very insignificant sideshow brought about the down fall. From my opinion, it was about 5 years too late, but something is better that nothing. Under Jim Bramson, the ADA was systematically giving away the very scope of practice that makes us special. Now, we are going to San Antonio to see if we can reverse the calamitous direction that the Association had been dragged toward. With a White Paper of the Academy of General Dentistry as a building block, a number of compatriots with who I have been working for these many years will try to persuade the HOD to reassess the needs of the patients that we serve and the mechanisms that will be useful to serve them.

Now, Ty, what is the point? OK, the point is that it matters who is in the House of Delegates. In recent years, fewer and fewer of the members of The House have been willing to stand for something – or anything. So when you send a delegate to the HOD in the future and that delegate elects a Trustee to go to the BOT to represent us in the 5th District, it matters. The person needs to care about the profession and be willing to express an opinion. It is politics. It requires meeting people and learning to interact with people all over the country. So the moral of this story is. Pick your leaders well. If the right person doesn’t volunteer, draft them. It does matter who represents you in these jobs. The Executive director of the American Dental Association doesn’t have a dog in the hunt any bigger that yours. Thanks for the ride. I have enjoyed the opportunity to represent you.

PS. There is one big fight left to fight to try to keep the crazies from giving away the scope of practice. You will hear about it before October. When you are asked to make a phone call, don’t assume that everyone else will do it. Lend a hand. Make your calls

Editors Comments
- John Bowman -

The May 1987 edition of National Geographic included a feature about the arctic wolf. Author David Mech described how a seven member pack had targeted several musk-oxen calves who were guarded by eleven adults. As the wolves approached their quarry the musk-oxen bunched in an impenetrable semicircle, their deadly rear hooves facing out keeping the calves safe during a long stand off with the enemy.

But then a single ox broke rank and the herd scattered into nervous little groups.   A skirmish irrupted and the adults fled in panic leaving the calves to the mercy of the predators. Not a single calf survived.

Paul warned the Ephesian elders in Acts 20 that after his departure wolves would come , not sparing the flock.Wolves continue to attack today, but cannot penetrate and destroy when unity is maintained. Dr. Ivey has warned us of the wolves that would destroy the dentistry that has served the public for many years with quality care.

We must be informed, vigilant, and maintain our unity. Please read and take seriously Dr. Ivey's current article and contribute to our unity by attending the September CDDS meeting. Yes, the absence of just one dentist can harm our "impenetrable circle"

We need you!
