Words From the President
 Fellow CDDS Members:

Happy New Year! Hopefully everyone had a wonderful holiday and an opportunity to rest, relax, and spend quality time with your family and friends. Perhaps a few of your New Year's Resolutions are even still intact?

2008 is upon us and already promises to be an eventful year. Jay Harrington was elected GDA Vice President at the January House of Delegates Meeting! Jay has been a steward of organized dentistry for 20 years, and has provided consistent and effective leadership at the district and state level in many capacities. Congratulations, Jay, on this significant accomplishment. We look forward to supporting you as you lead our Association the next few years!

The 2008 Legislative session also promises to be vitally important for the dental profession. The hygienists are more organized than ever as they rally for general supervision, a stepping stone to independent practice. The have enlisted the help of the Coalition on Aging, a very powerful legislative force, to champion their efforts. Simply put, we have a fight on our hands this year. Please be sure to  include  your  contribution to  GADPAC with your dues. We will certainly need the ammunition. I would also encourage you to participate in LAW DAY on March 12. It is a fun day and an opportunity to see how the legislative process works. It also reinforces our level of commitment to our patients and sends a powerful message to our legislators.

The Annual meeting will be held at the Ritz Carlton at Amelia Island. This is a truly world class resort, and this years meeting is loaded with activities sure to create a memorable vacation for everyone.  The CE lineup will be superb.

We will be hosted by our colleagues at RAFB for our February meeting. This is always an enjoyable meeting and an opportunity to meet and fellowship with the outstanding team of Dentists at Robins AFB.  They will again offer an all day course on Friday worth 8 hrs of CE. Be sure to sign up for this great opportunity.

I look forward to seeing everyone there.

All the best,
Mike Loden

Thanks to all who made our Legislative Reception a great success.  We had fifteen legislators in attendance which is the highest in a number of years.  We also had a number of spouses attend which was a great idea thanks to Dr. Kara Moore.  Again, thanks to those who made calls, the contact dentists and Dr. Don Benton for making the arrangements with the Macon City Club.

CDDS LAW DAY
WEDNESDAY,MARCH 12th
Please mark this day to attend our Law  Day.  Presently, I have 28 members who have signed to go.  We also have one spouse who has signed up.  Remember spouses are welcomed to go, just let me know so I can include them.  This will be late in the session, and you never know just what may be unfolding for dentistry and health care.

EVERY BODY COUNTS! so join your fellow colleagues and go!

Any questions call:  478.453.8666 (O) and 456.5900 (C).

BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING MINUTES

HIGHLIGHTS - 1/12/08

The Dental Practice Act will be opened in the GA Legislature this year to help Emory (with financial reimbursements) and MCG (with recruiting new faculty).

Dental Advertising will not be addressed yet because the GA Board wants more time to study the survey done by the GDA.

A "Carve-out" of Dentistry will not happen this session due to a lack of interest by Governor Sonny Perdue.   This will present a hardship for a number of citizens and for their dentists.

Feb 22nd will be a GDA/MCG Faculty mixer/social/BBQ at the Savannah River Veranda River House in Evans, GA.  RSVP to Nelda Greene at GDA offices by Feb 15th

ADA New Dentists Committee meeting will be held in New Orleans this June 26-28.  GDA will pay for one dentist per Congressional District to attend.  Nominations for this "scholarship" are due by March 1st.   Kara Moore, Don Benton and Mike Loden will search for a candidate.

EDITOR'S Comments
Dr. John Bowman
Joy Davidman in “Smoke on the Mountain” recounted the following story:
Once there was a little old man.  His hands trembled; when he ate he clattered the silverware distressingly, missed his mouth with the spoon as often as not, and dribbled a bit of food on the tablecloth.  Now he lived with his married son, having nowhere else to live, and his son's wife didn't like the arrangement.   “I can't have this”, she said.  “It interferes with my right to happiness”.  So she and her husband took the old man gently but firmly by the arm and led him to the corner of the kitchen.  There they set him on a stool and gave him his food in an earthenware bowl.  From then on he always ate in the corner, blinking at the table with wistful eyes.

One day his hands trembled rather more than usual and the earthenware bowl fell and broke. “If you are a pig” said the daughter-in-law, “you must eat out of a trough.”  So they made him a little wooden trough and he got his meals in that.

These people had a four year old son of whom they were very fond.  One evening the young man noticed his boy playing intently with some bits of wood and asked what he was doing.  “I'm making a trough”, he said, smiling up for approval, “to feed you and momma out of when I get big.”

The man and his wife looked at each other for a while and didn't say anything.  Then they cried a little.  Then they went to the corner and took the old man by the arm and led him back to the table.  They sat him in a comfortable chair and gave him food on a plate, and from then on no one ever scolded when he clattered or spilled  or broke things.

How we speak of our fellow dentists...how we look at our fellow dentists...how we look at our patients...how we treat/deal with one another…

Remember the advice given in Ephesians 4:32…
Be ye kind one to another.
Each one is important.

Please attend/participate in our dental society activities/meetings.  Be an encourager!
