WORDS FROM THE
PRESIDENT
Fellow CDDS Members: As we prepare for our November meeting, I am filled with excitement for the arrival of my favorite season. Stifling heat and smothering humidity yield to crisp fall breezes and the sound of red and orange leaves crackling underfoot. Saturdays in Sanford Stadium rooting on the DAWGS (or perhaps if you have another team to support, though I could never understand why), an opportunity to see the sunrise from your favorite deer stand, or maybe an opportunity to sport an obnoxious sweater on the golf course. In my world, life is good this time of year. November is also host to my favorite holiday; Thanksgiving. Not because I can eat too much turkey and dressing (TWICE) and nap in a recliner ʺwatchingʺ football (I do enjoy this). But because Thanksgiving provides a pleasant reminder of all the things I have to be thankful for. I am thankful for a wonderful family, for the support and fellowship of my colleagues, and to be part of a profession that provides so much for so many. I am also thankful for the opportunity to serve the Central District, an organization I am proud to be a part of. We all have so much to be thankful for. We will be hosting our state officers at this meeting. Martha Phillips works tirelessly answering the call of duty as our executive director. I think we all realize how fortunate we are to have her on our side. Our officers devote a significant amount of their schedules supporting us all year. Letʹs show them how thankful we are for their efforts with a strong show of support for them this meeting. I look forward to seeing you there! All the best, Mike Loden |

For those who have never been, this is a great experience and one that will give you complete satisfaction. Health care issues are sure to be at the top of the pile of legislation this year. ADA REPORT
by Dr. Ty Ivey The Annual Session of the ADA was held in San Francisco from September 28 - October 2. The Executive Committee of the CDDS has had a very clear report of my position on some of the major issues. There were three I believe are of particular interest: Membership, SCHIPS and Alaska. Some might think two out of three isn’t too bad, but all three were extremely important to me. The Membership Issue which would have given membership status to hygienist, assistants and ancillary dental personnel was soundly defeated by a margin of 74 to 8. Some states have membership categories, but I was of the opinion that on a national scale this was not good business. SCHIPS...We prevailed on the issue of holding the SCHIPS level at 200% of the poverty level. The big states with higher cost of living were in favor of this and fought for it to the end. Many suggested that this was back door National Health Insurance since 400% that has been proposed in Congress would cover approximately 80% of all children. The ADA has had the wrong position on this issue and we can only hope that President Bush vetoes the current legislation. A message was sent to our leadership. Alaska….I could write a book. After having the opportunity to serve on the Task Force in charge of this issue, I feel that I am as informed on this issue as anyone. The Task Force was ended last year and the ADA took a different tact on dealing with the problem after the Task Force could no longer have any input on the issue. A settlement was made in July which I still believe was the wrong thing to do. Those of us who fought city hall and the Board of Trustees on this were soundly defeated. Your representative took a position that put him at odds with some of our own delegation. There is not enough space here to tell the entire story and if interested, please ask. However, the US government now has a template in place to create a mid-level provider which will be a high school graduate with two years of training (subject to change) who can perform extractions and cut and place fillings. My position has been that we need to train more dentists. The cry is to solve access to care even when it is not clearly defined. What this means is driving everyone including the ADA and the Dental Hygiene Association to seek a way to expand the dental work force. For those outside of the ADA, their plans take the scope of practice from us. Our plans give it away. I may be too old to deal with the issue, but I don’t like the direction we are taking. Usually these proposals have much lower educational standards than we currently have. I fought this to the bitter end and have probably damaged my abilities to function at the national level, but I did what I believed was right. |

In
Elmer Bendiner’s book, The Fall of Fortresses, he describes onebombing run over the German city of Kassel: Our B‐17 (The Tondelayo) was barraged by flack from Nazi antiaircraft guns. That was not unusual, but on this particular occasion our gas tanks were hit. Later, as I reflected on the miracle of a twenty‐millimeter shell piercing the fuel tank without touching off an explosion, our pilot, Bohn Fawkes, told me it was not quite that simple. One the morning following the raid, Bohn had gone down to ask our crew chief for that shell as a souvenir of unbelievable luck. The crew chief told Bohn that not jus tone shell but eleven had been found in the gas tanks ‐ eleven unexploded shells where only one was sufficient to blast us out of the sky. It was as if the sea had been parted for us. Even after thirty‐five years, so awesome an event leaves me shaken, especially after I heard the rest of the story from Bohn. He was told that the shells had been sent to the armorers to be defused. The armorers told him that Intelligence had picked them up. They could not say why at the time, but Bohn eventually sought out the answer. Apparently when the armorers opened each of those shells, they found no explosive charge. They were as clean as a whistle and just as harmless. Empty? Not all of them. One contained a carefully rolled piece of paper. On it was a scrawl in Czech. The Intelligence people scoured our base for a man who could read Czech. Eventually, they found one to decipher the note. It set us marveling. Translated, the note read: “This is all we can do for you now.” Fellow Dentists ….. The question for each of us today is...what are we doing to help insure that our profession of Dentistry will be better for the next generation of Dentists who will follow us? What can we do to improve our culture? What can you do? What will you do?............. Dr. John Bowman |
