Words From the President
I want to express my appreciation for the opportunity to serve as the CDDS president.  Thank you for the confidence you show by allowing me this honor.

I've heard that the only sure thing in life is constant change.  This year has certainly revealed truth in that statement for me.  As we all enjoy the excitement of changes in the dental profession, we must reflect on how some of these changes can affect "life as we know it".  In doing so, I encourage all of you to become involved in every aspect of the GDA, the CDDS and especially the GADPAC.  This is our voice and our tool to channel this change in a way that enhances our practices, our lives and our patient’s lives. I will ask that you pay special attention to issues of a political nature such as the Alaskan Dental Therapist Act, managed care, direct reimbursement and Medicaid.

Please attend as many meetings as possible to increase your awareness and knowledge.  I also encourage the use of all GDA resources.  As an added bonus to attending meetings, a door prize will be added to our meeting format.

I look forward to a productive year.

Sincerely,

Don Spillers

BOT
President-Elect reports on BOT
August 13, 2005
·       GDA has sent letter to Cathy Cox supporting the Georgia Board of Dentistry's request for increased funding.

·       Some dental labs are out-sourcing offshore. Ask your lab of they are doing so.

·
The Georgia Board of Regents recently approved asking the Georgia State Legislature for $78 million of the $108 million needed to build a new dental school. The remainder of the funds needed to build the school will come from corporate and private donations. A task force is looking at how Georgia dentists can support this effort.

·
Medicaid changes are continuing. The Doral contract has been evaluated by the GDA. If you are contacted about signing other contracts have the GDA do a contract analysis before you sign.

·
Robert Renjel, General Counsel for the GDA, is working on an online CE course on Ethics and Georgia law.

·
Districts will be asked to purchase neckties for legislators and present then at the legislative receptions.

·
The issue of where future new dental hygiene schools should be placed has been addressed by the GDA.

·
Proposal will be sent to the Georgia Board of Dentistry to allow up to 10 hours of CE credit per cycle for providing, free of charge and through a charitable program, dental services to the indigent and undeserved of Georgia.

·
ADA Work Force Task Force has proposed new work force models that include different levels of assistants, community dental health aides, oral prevention assistants, and advanced dental hygienists. The Board has concerns with this model and the ADA delegation will address these.

·
Newest radiation recommendations are available from the GDA - May be on website soon.

·
Non-renewing GDA dentists are listed in the August GDA Action - Please encourage them to return.
Respectfully submitted by,
Deena Holliman Smith
